SOFT TISSUE

softtissue3Soft Tissue Immersion Course:

This advanced level, limited-attendance course is an “intensive immersion experience” designed for clinicians who already have experience with peri-implant soft tissue management, oral soft tissue grafting and periodontal plastic surgery—and who are interested in expanding and elevating their scientific and clinical knowledge and improving their surgical skills related to performing oral soft tissue grafting, periodontal plastic surgery, and state-of-the-art soft tissue implant site development procedures, in order to increase the level of success and implementation of these procedures in their clinical practices. This course is conducted in a highly interactive environment leading to a profound learning experience.

At the completion of this course, doctors should be able to:

  • Fully comprehend the anatomic and biologic basis for performing peri-implant soft tissue surgery, oral reconstructive soft tissue and periodontal plastic surgery procedures.
  • Master the surgical principles, current material science and tissue engineering principles related to performing reconstructive soft tissue and periodontal plastic surgery procedures.
  • Understand the applications and limitations of tissue flaps and surgical approaches commonly used in dental implant and periodontal plastic surgery, and refine surgical skills related to performing soft tissue procedures to enhance function and esthetics around dental implants and natural dentition.

At the completion of this course, doctors should understand the applications, limitations and the procedural details required to perform the following soft tissue augmentation procedures at a highly successful level:

  • Epithelialized palatal mucosal grafting (gingival grafts)
  • Subepithelial connective tissue grafting (palate and tuberosity)
  • Use of soft tissue graft substitutes
  • Combination onlay-interpositional grafting to improve the quality and quantity of soft tissue cover prior to bone grafting procedures and for root and abutment coverage
  • Vascularized periosteal connective tissue flap (VIP-CT Flap) procedures for large volume soft tissue augmentation at compromised maxillary anterior sites
  • Papilla augmentation procedures
  • Esthetic crown extension procedures

At the completion of this course, doctors should be able to become adept at selecting and sequencing specific soft tissue site development and periodontal plastic surgery procedures as part of multidisciplinary management of complex dental implant and conventional dental reconstructions.

Surgical assistants will receive training in the following areas:

  • Identifying patients who would benefit from the oral soft tissue grafting, periodontal plastic surgery, and soft tissue implant site development procedures learned in this course
  • Patient consultation and case presentation
  • Informed consent
  • Operatory set up
  • Aseptic technique
  • Use of tissue engineering materials
  • Protocols for effective surgical assisting
  • Care and maintenance of instrumentation and equipment
  • Inventory control of supplies and materials
  • Peri-operative patient management, including placement and removal of periodontal dressings and adjustment and reline of provisional prosthesis

This course will help surgical assistants with implementation of the Sclar Center Clinical Patient Management Protocols for successful management of patients who undergo complex peri-implant soft tissue grafting and periodontal plastic surgery procedures.

Detail:
42 hours of CE credits are given for this 5-day course. Although no prerequisite is required for this course, participants are expected to already have substantial experience in dental implant surgery, soft tissue implant site development, and periodontal plastic surgery as detailed in the Sclar Center Intermediate and Advanced Soft Tissue courses. Additionally, students should become familiar with the precourse reading materials that will be supplied in advance. Students are encouraged to make hotel arrangements at the nearby Sonesta Bayfront Hotel in Coconut Grove. Transportation to and from the Sclar Center will be provided.
