FOCUS
Topic Specific Focus Course Series:
Extraction Site Management and Ridge Preservation:
This comprehensive, topic specific focus course focuses on functional and esthetic treatment protocols and is designed for clinicians with early to intermediate level of experience in implant dentistry. Evidence based clinical presentations, extensive cased based learning, video surgery footage, live surgery observation, hands-on surgical and prosthetic skills workshops, and case planning exercises will ensure that participants gain the scientific and clinical knowledge and surgical skills required to implement extractions site management and ridge preservation protocols in their practices.
We will discuss the following individual case factors in terms of their effect on achieving and maintaining desired functional and esthetic outcomes:
- Tooth removal technique
- Root parameters
- Socket wall thickness
- Selection and handling of graft material
- Management of socket wall defects
- Timing of implant placement
- Management of periimplant defects
We will compare and contrast technique modifications aimed at achieving either maximum osseous regeneration within the socket or limiting the negative dimensional ridge modeling that follows tooth removal.
We will review:
- Straight forward to complex case studies with long term clinical follow up.
- Clinical and radiographic data used to establish the level of efficacy of the Bio-Col™ ridge preservation protocols
Hands on workshops, using cadaver specimens and/or simulated models in our high tech simulation lab, will allow participants to practice:
- Minimally traumatic tooth extractions
- Ridge preservation protocols for delayed and immediate implant placements
- Fabrication of immediate implant provisional restorations.
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to answer the following questions:
- How do I minimize trauma during tooth extraction?
- How do I prepare the socket to receive the graft?
- What are the best graft materials to use and why?
- Does site specific graft handling influence the outcome?
- What types of interim provisional restorations work best for protection of the grafted socket and preservation of tissue architecture?
- How do I decide when to perform immediate or delayed implant placement?
- Can I perform ridge preservation at an infected site?
- When is an immediate implant provisional restoration indicated?
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:
- Describe the unique biology of the alveolar ridge and the rationale for ridge preservation
- Discuss important tissue engineering concepts pertinent to successful ridge preservation
- List the materials and instrumentation required to perform ridge preservation procedures
- Perform minimally traumatic tooth extraction and the Bio-Col™ ridge preservation protocol for immediate & delayed placements and membrane assisted ridge preservation for management of labial bone extraction site defects
- Fabricate and deliver an immediate implant provisional restoration
- Discuss practice management concepts required to implement minimally traumatic extraction site management and ridge preservation protocols into their clinical practices
